Last updated: July 12, 2026 — prices verified July 2026. I live in Japan, buy from suruga-ya.jp and the physical stores regularly, and for this article I priced the same items on both sites on the same day.
Every guide to Suruga-ya repeats the same line: “the English site has about a 25% markup, so use a proxy.” That number is out of date, and the real answer is more interesting. I pulled five identical used figures on suruga-ya.jp and suruga-ya.com on July 12, 2026, and every single one was priced at exactly 1.40× the Japanese price — a 40% markup. The handling fee everyone quotes as ¥500 is now ¥900 per order. And yet, because Suruga-ya runs frequent free-international-shipping campaigns (one is running right now, July 11–16), the English site sometimes beats a proxy anyway.
So here is the short version, then the receipts.
The Answer Up Front
- No campaign running: the proxy route wins. Always, in every cart size I modeled — by ¥1,500 on a ¥3,000 order and by ¥8,800 on a ¥30,000 order.
- During a free-shipping campaign (Suruga-ya runs them several times a year): the English site wins for cheap-but-bulky carts — games, manga lots, prize figures — up to roughly ¥15,000–¥20,000 of merchandise. Above that, or for compact high-value carts (scale figures, trading cards), the 40% markup outgrows the shipping you save and the proxy wins again.
- During a 20%-off coupon event stacked with free shipping (these happen — figures in March 2026, toys in April 2026): the English site is very hard to beat, because the effective markup drops to ~12%.
- Buying from multiple stores at once (Suruga-ya + Mercari + AmiAmi in one box): proxy, no contest — consolidation is the whole point.
The rule of thumb, for a free-shipping window: compare (0.4 × your JP-price subtotal + ¥900) against (your proxy’s per-item fees + the full international shipping you’d pay). Whichever is smaller wins. Outside those windows, don’t bother with the math — use a proxy.
Now the details, because the details are where the money is.
What Suruga-ya Is (in 60 Seconds)
Suruga-ya is Japan’s biggest second-hand hobby retailer: used games, figures, manga, CDs, doujinshi, trading cards, at prices that are often half of what the same item fetches on eBay. It runs two separate storefronts:
- suruga-ya.jp — the Japanese domestic site. Cheapest prices, ships only within Japan. To buy from overseas you need a proxy service.
- suruga-ya.com — the official English/international site, launched for direct overseas orders. Same warehouse, different prices.
The question is never “is Suruga-ya cheap” (it is). The question is which door you walk through.
The English Site: What It Actually Costs
The markup is now 40%, not 25%
When suruga-ya.com raised prices in August 2023, the official announcement said international prices would be 10–25% above domestic tax-inclusive prices, and “25%” has been repeated in every review since (MFC’s review, forum threads, the lot). Here is what I measured on July 12, 2026 — five used prize figures (a category whose Japanese price bands we mapped in detail), Suruga-ya direct stock, identical item codes on both sites:

Not “up to 25%.” Not approximately anything. Exactly 1.40×, five out of five. Unless you catch a coupon, assume everything on the English site costs 40% more than the Japanese price.
It gets worse for one specific case: suruga-ya.jp also hosts third-party marketplace sellers, whose offers are often cheaper than Suruga-ya’s own stock — and those offers don’t exist on the English site. That Gojo figure had a marketplace offer at ¥2,240. Against that, the English site’s ¥3,920 is a 75% premium.
The fees
- Handling fee: ¥900 per order, flat, on top of everything (official Q&A). Older guides say ¥500; that’s outdated.
- International shipping: DHL, EMS, or SAL, charged at carrier rates (official Q&A). Expect EMS-class prices — ¥3,900 for 0.5 kg to the US, ¥7,900 for 2 kg.
- Shipping discount: ¥500 off shipping per ¥10,000 spent in one order, capped at the shipping cost (official Q&A). Helpful, but it’s nibbling at the edges of a 40% markup.
The campaigns (this is the English site’s real weapon)
Suruga-ya runs free international shipping campaigns several times a year — there was one in November 2025, and another is live right now: July 11–16, 2026, no minimum purchase, though the ¥900 handling fee still applies. It also runs category coupon events, like 20% off figure orders over ¥10,000 in March 2026 and the same for toys in April. These campaigns are the only reason the English site is ever competitive — and when they stack, it genuinely is.
The Proxy Route: The Full Cost Stack
Buying from suruga-ya.jp through a proxy (Neokyo, ZenMarket, Remambo and others support it — see the pitfalls section, because not all do anymore) means paying the real Japanese price, plus:
- Domestic shipping to the proxy warehouse: free at ¥1,500+, ¥385 under ¥1,500, ¥440 under ¥1,000 (official shipping Q&A). Any normal haul clears ¥1,500, so usually ¥0.
- Suruga-ya’s mail-order handling fee: ¥240 on orders under ¥5,000, free at ¥5,000+ (official payment guide). A small, widely-missed fee that punishes tiny orders.
- Proxy service fee: ¥350/item at Neokyo, ¥500/item at ZenMarket, as of July 2026 — full breakdown in our proxy comparison. I use ¥350 in the tables below.
- International shipping from the proxy, at Japan Post/courier rates. I use official EMS rates to the US (Zone 4): ¥3,900 / 0.5 kg, ¥5,300 / 1 kg, ¥7,900 / 2 kg, ¥12,700 / 4 kg. EMS is the conservative choice, not the cheapest one — small packet and air parcel undercut it at most weights, which shifts the totals below further toward the proxy.
- Import duties, which since August 2025 apply to US orders of any value — but they hit both routes, so they mostly cancel out of this comparison (see below, and our US tariff guide).
The Real Math: Three Carts, Both Routes
Assumptions: EMS to the US on both routes (Suruga-ya direct also offers EMS, so this is apples-to-apples; its DHL quotes are frequently higher), Neokyo-level ¥350/item proxy fee, prices verified July 2026. “JP subtotal” is the suruga-ya.jp price; the English site charges 1.4× that. Normal week: proxy saves ¥3,350. Campaign week: English site saves ¥4,050. With a stacked coupon: English site saves ¥6,850 — nearly 60% cheaper per item than the “always use a proxy” advice would have cost you.
Cart 3: ¥30,000 — and here’s where it gets interesting
The winner at ¥30,000 depends on what the ¥30,000 is, because the markup scales with price while shipping scales with weight.
Version A — six cheap-ish items (games, manga sets, prize figures), ~4 kg:

Even at ¥30,000, a heavy cart during a campaign tips slightly to the English site (¥1,900 difference — close enough to call it a tie once packaging differences enter).
Version B — two scale figures, ~2 kg: English site during campaign: ¥42,900. Proxy: ¥30,000 + ¥700 + ¥7,900 = ¥38,600. Proxy wins by ¥4,300, and the gap keeps widening as value-per-kilogram rises. TCG orders — high value, near-zero weight — are the extreme case: the proxy always wins those.
So “how many items until the proxy wins”?
The honest answer: it’s not the item count, it’s yen-per-kilogram. During a free-shipping campaign, the English site’s penalty is 0.4 × subtotal + ¥900; the proxy’s is fees + full international shipping. Cheap-and-heavy carts (retro games, manga, prize figures) favor the English site up to about ¥15,000–¥20,000. Light-and-expensive carts (scale figures, cards, doujinshi) favor the proxy from roughly ¥10,000 up — and outside campaign windows, the proxy wins from the first yen.
One more asymmetry for Americans: duties are now charged on declared value, and the English site declares the marked-up price. A 10% duty on ¥42,000 is ¥1,200 more than 10% on ¥30,000. Small, but it always leans the same way.
Pitfalls on Both Routes
Stock sync and cancellations. Both sites sell single-copy used stock, and inventory syncs with the physical stores and the other site with a lag. Suruga-ya is notorious among collectors for canceling orders days later because the item had already sold. Proxies add a second delay (you order, they order), so popular items vanish between your click and theirs. Nothing is yours until it ships.
Not every proxy can still buy from Suruga-ya. Suruga-ya has tightened rules on proxy buyers over the years (prepayment requirements, outright blocks). Users on collector forums report FROM JAPAN lost access, while Neokyo, ZenMarket and Remambo currently publish Suruga-ya buying guides. Check your proxy’s store list before building a cart.
The English site’s machine translation will hide items from you. Real listings from the figures category this week: “Power ‘Chien Sauman’” (Chainsaw Man) and “Funeral Freeren” (葬送のフリーレン, i.e. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End). If you search suruga-ya.com in normal English titles, you will miss stock. Search by series’ Japanese name or item code instead.
Learn the condition shorthand. Suruga-ya grades loosely compared with Mandarake. On the JP site, watch for 状態難 (“condition issues” — expect real damage), 傷み (“wear”), 箱なし (“no box”), ジャンク (“junk, sold as-is”). The English site translates these inconsistently, and neither site posts per-item photos for most stock. Price gaps between identical listings usually mean condition gaps.
Marketplace sellers are a different animal. Third-party offers on suruga-ya.jp set their own domestic shipping (not free at ¥1,500) and their own grading. Cheaper on paper, more variance in practice.
FAQ
Is suruga-ya.com legit? Yes — it’s Suruga-ya’s own official international storefront, shipping from the same warehouses. The complaints are about pricing and slow fulfillment, not legitimacy.
Does suruga-ya.jp ship overseas? No. The Japanese site is domestic-only; that’s what proxies are for.
Is the markup really 40%? As of July 12, 2026, every item I checked was exactly 1.40× the Japanese tax-inclusive price. The official 2023 announcement said 10–25%, so it has drifted up since; spot-check your own items before ordering.
Which proxy is best for Suruga-ya? Neokyo (¥350/item, free domestic shipping into its warehouse on ¥1,500+ Suruga-ya carts) is the cheapest reliable option for multi-item hauls; ZenMarket (¥500/item) is the polished all-rounder. Details in our proxy comparison.
How often do the free shipping campaigns run? Several times a year, sometimes back-to-back with coupon events — November 2025, March, April and July 2026 all had one. They’re announced on the suruga-ya.com blog; if your cart is under ~¥15,000 and not urgent, waiting for one is usually worth it.
What about US customs? Since August 2025 there’s no $800 de minimis exemption; as of July 2026 US buyers pay roughly a 10% surcharge either route, prepaid via DDP with most proxies or billed by the carrier on direct orders.
